Volunteer Mentors (VSME-161)

Do you have the aptitude and desire it takes to provide voluntary support to clients that have recently been released from prison and require support within the community? Are you ready for a volunteering role that’s varied and rewarding and provides an opportunity for both personal and professional growth? Then join us as a Volunteer Mentor and you could soon be embarking on a really worthwhile part-time role that fits in with your other commitments.

A well-established charity that helps ex-offenders and disadvantaged people to move their lives forward, St Giles Trust offers support to help people overcome any issue that might be holding them back. Our Norfolk & Suffolk contract for Community Provision delivers employment related help aimed at getting ex-offenders into the workplace such as CV and interview preparation. It also provides mentoring support that’s focused on broader issues like encouraging clients to attend appointments and fostering good relations with partner agencies. Put simply, our mentoring starts at the prison gates and only ends when our clients have the skills they need to succeed in life beyond prison. It's here that we need your help.

What you’ll be doing:

• Committing two or three days per week of your time (we will try to accommodate anyone with a genuine interest in our work who can only spare a day a week) to work flexibly to accommodate clients into a varying schedule.
• Meeting clients upon release from prison, discussing their support needs, helping them to attend appointments within the community and sign posting to other agencies if required.
• Working alongside other agencies to build professional relationships and looking at potential additional support from other agencies.
• Following health and safety policies and procedures as instructed and promoting the ethos of St Giles Trust.
• Providing mentoring for clients in a positive manner at all times in a way that helps them reach their specific goals.

And what you’ll need:

• You could be someone with lots of life skills – perhaps retired and looking to give something back. However the role could also suit younger candidates with an interest in the criminal justice sector and seeking practical experience.
• An understanding of the issues faced by offenders upon release from prison and possibly some experience of providing support to a similar client group.
• The ability to calculate risk and implement safety procedures when engaging with clients, assist in the running of groups and work with clients one on one.
• Good verbal and written communication skills, including form filling, plus the ability to work on your own initiative and follow instructions when required.
• The willingness to travel within the region and undergo training as required.
